Things I heart, take 6

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Wow, only take 6, huh?  Sorry everyone, there are plenty of things that I’ve hearted in the past few months, I just haven’t written about them I suppose.  Either way, here I am, falling madly in love with this wine.  It’s the 2006 Melusine Lyra Gruner Veltliner from winemaker Marion Ebner.  I mean, really, this is gruner?  Heck yeah!

Let’s being with the story of the winemaker Marion Ebner.  She grew up in Vienna and knew early on that she was interested in winemaking.  She enrolled in school just for that - which I should mention is not that common.  Most winemakers in Austria are born in in to the wine business…and most are guys.  When she was 16, she landed an internship with a great winery in Austria and worked under winemaker Fritz Wieninger (whose wines are also delicious, may I add). She went on to work in a wine shop (awesome) and the the marketing side of wine while gathering some resources.  She made a deal to cultivate some grapes in the Kamptal region and began producing the first small amount of the wonderful Melusine.  The Melusine is not like other Gruner Veltliners - it’s a lot fuller bodied and has so much complexity, you’ll probably be thinking about it still 45 minutes after you taste it.  The press quickly caught on to this small production wine, and with each vintage she gained more and more respect.

Now I’m sitting here drinking, er, tasting, the ‘06 which is just utterly fantastic.  As I mentioned before, it’s a fuller bodied gruner that sees some oak (French).  I could just smell this wine all day long.  If Melusine was made in to a perfume, that would be my scent. The nose is full of pineapple, citrus and white stone fruit (sweet apples anyone?).  The palate is lush and complex with fresh fruit and a creaminess that is balanced by a beautiful acidity.

Only 222 bottles were brought in to the US and if I had the funds, I’d be buying a lot of this.  However, lucky for you, we still have a little left…and if you get to West Town in the next day or so, we’ll still have some open to taste.

LUSH WEST TOWN
1412 West Chicago Avenue

Launch Party
Friday, December 4th
6-9pm

LUSH West Town was licensed and we cranked it up, whipped that shop into some sort of presentable shape, and are OPEN. Doors are open everyday at noon until 10pm. Now, mind you, this is Lush in the raw…partially stocked, lacking our signature rolling carts, mounted wall art, and some supplies…but WITH open bottles, very excited Lushies, and lots of super geeky bottles and two, yeah, count ‘em, two!, beer coolers.

CELEBRATE our launch, the holidays, or just for the hell of it. Please join in the wild and raucous celebration THIS FRIDAY, December 4th, 6-9pm, as we open to the holiday and revel in the sweet sweetness of having a shiny, brand spanking new play thing. This is absolutely a LUSH style shindig with many bottles open and flowing…wine, beer, and perhaps a bit of HUM and bubbly, too…small nibbles and a very warm welcome to neighbors, friends, and lushes all. Yeehaw, it’s a party.

YOU are invited.  And you.  And all your friends.

P.S. Ms Kelly is celebrating her birthday, as well.  Make sure to wish her a happy celebration!

Stocking the shelves…

Get your GEEK on: Stocking a shop
Although quite a bit less geeky than usual in the intellectual sense, this topic is geeky in the most particular wine geeky slant of detailing the minutia of selecting wine and stocking the Lush shelves. In the interest of imbibing honesty and being open to the new neighborhood and the gorgeous expanse of space at the brand spanking new LUSH West Town, this little note is a window into the collective workings of a lush… (more…)

Sad Face

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

LUSH West Town has been in the works for quite some time.  From the ground construction takes a bit of time, apparently, and contractors and carpenters, painters, plumbers, and such are a rowdy bunch and take some cajoling to meet deadlines.  Throwing booze at them only helps so much, and my super sad face just didn’t do it.  So, it’s been an intense, battling struggle to restrain our anxiety and overflowing joy to be opening a new shop.  We are nearly spilling over…just waiting for the dear city to bestow the ultimate gift, the golden ticket of a liquor license.  I will absolutely holler at the top of my virtual internet lungs the moment that our status progresses. Oh please, oh please, oh please.

However, in the meantime, alas, I must unfortunately call a halt to our raucuous plans for Friday the 13th and kabosh the launch party until another date.  Do not fear, free wine, beer and snackies will be available when said party commences.  It will be a knee-slapping roof shaking good time.  We’ve got to break the new store in, of course.  So, NO go on the grand opening of Lush West Town this week.  If we do indeed procure said license, I will throw open the doors and welcome the thirsty, the seekers of knowledge and fun.

Please partake in the good times and show your support of our local little wine shop.  We are extremely thrilled to join the West Town neighborhood and the amazing local joints along the way…food, art, and a lively, smart drinking culture.  Pop in and say hi; get to know your Lushes.  And, we LOVE you.

For future reference, all pertinent details below…LUSH West Town, 1412 West Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL  60642.  312-666-6900.  Holler at rachel@lushwineandspirits.com with questions.

And, for an alternative party plan, joing LUSH Roscoe 4-6pm for a vertical Goose Island Bourbon County Stout tasting (06, 07, 08, 09) with a little dash of Matilda and Sophie…good historical lesson, ya know…AND, 6-8pm for a wine tasting with Lagniappe founder Andrew Grossman.  We’ll be tasting the great Dexter Lake mustache clad wine, Forlorn Hope, and some Argentinian juice.

Savvy?  LUSH it up.
