SUNDAYS WITH LUSH: 10.16.2011

Mitch’s picks
You know him. You can’t miss him. Big n’ burly, bearded, ponytailed, and larger-than-life, the captain of this crazy Lush ship is the magical Mitch Einhorn, and this Sunday is devoted to wines that he chose himself. His palate is as big as his personality; expect lots of crazy California Rhone blends, but also weird, super intense Austrian powerhouses, and maybe some northwest loving throw in there, too. Get inside the brain of our fearless leader by sipping on some of his favorites this Sunday. (more…)

The odd couple…
My local European style grocery store pops up random deliciousness on a frequent basis, and last week, there was an overflowing pile of gloriously fresh shittake mushrooms.  Their pungent earthy aroma was so enticing, that I just couldn’t pass it up.  So, I grabbed a good bit of shrooms and scooted on home.  As for prep, I wanted to really focus on bringing out and highlighting the flavors of the shittake mushrooms without too much distraction.  Thus, I dusted them off, snapped the stems, and tossed them in lovely sweet cream butter.  And while the mushrooms sizzled away, the search for a proper wine pairing began.  Luckily, a super awesome closeout on some amazing wine had corresponded with my shroom discovery…and the Zmor Gewurztraminer from the Russian River Valley was already chilling in the fridge.

Hot times, summer in the city.

By: Ms. Wendy, wine geek extraordinaire.

Is there anything better than Chicago in the summer? Cubs games, lake trips, biking trails, picnics in one of our hundreds of parks, swimming pools and sidewalk cafes keep the hope in our hearts during those long, lonely winter months. For me, personally, it’s knowing that my palate will once again crave white wine! Perfect, crisp, refreshing white wine. Hints of honeydew, airs of apricot, achingly acidic white wine captures the essence of summer weather. Lucky for me, I work at a wine store and have access to hundreds of delicious bottles just waiting to be chilled!

A little bit about me: I have a tendency to get very excited.  As a result I often get overwhelmed when the moment comes to make a decision.  I want to choose a bottle that best captures what I’m feeling at the moment and one that will, hopefully, agree with the palate of whoever I may be entertaining.  To keep my enthusiasm in check, I’ve created a list of “must drinks” for the summer. To further simplify things, I’ve separated it into categories.   Lists make everything better.  (more…)
